Delivery driver jobs in Toledo: what to know about Lucas County

Verified facts about the area you would be driving: geography, commute times, weather and winter road conditions.

If you are weighing delivery driver jobs in Toledo, it helps to know the place you would be driving. This guide sticks to facts we could verify from official and reference sources: the geography of Lucas County, population and commute figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, typical seasonal weather, and how winter plowing and transit work in the city. Level Logistics, LLC is a veteran-owned Amazon Delivery Service Partner (DSP) based in Toledo and hiring drivers. We do not publish route areas, pay or schedules in this article. Ask us about pay and schedules when you apply.

The lay of the land

Toledo is in northwestern Ohio, in Lucas County, and sits at the mouth of the Maumee River along Maumee Bay at the southwestern tip of Lake Erie, according to Britannica. It is about 55 miles southwest of Detroit. Britannica describes Toledo as the hub of a metropolitan area that includes Ottawa Hills, Maumee, Oregon, Sylvania, Perrysburg and Rossford. Lucas County's own website says the county has Lake Erie to the east and the Maumee River to the southeast, that Toledo is the county seat, and that much of the county was once part of the Great Black Swamp.

The Census Bureau counts about 263,423 people in the city of Toledo (July 2025 estimate) across 80.49 square miles of land, and 423,347 people in Lucas County (July 2025 estimate) across 339.66 square miles of land. In other words, the county combines a mid-sized city with many neighboring communities.

Which of these areas a delivery route covers depends on how deliveries are assigned, and we will not guess here. A DSP's driver is assigned a route, as we explain in what an Amazon DSP delivery driver actually does.

Commute times

The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates put the mean travel time to work for workers age 16 and older at 19.8 minutes in the city of Toledo and 20.5 minutes in Lucas County. These are averages for all workers and all modes, so your own commute will vary with where you live and when your shift starts.

If you do not have a car for the trip to work, the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA) lists 18 fixed bus routes, an on-demand TARTA Flex service in designated zones, and says veterans may qualify for reduced fares through an application. TARTA's information line is 419-243-7433. Transit schedules may not match early or late shifts, so check routes and times on TARTA's website against the shift you are considering.

Toledo weather by season

These monthly averages are the 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Toledo, as compiled from NOAA data by CurrentResults:

  • Winter: January averages a high of 35 and a low of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. February is 38 and 22. December is 39 and 26.
  • Spring: March averages 48 and 30, April 62 and 40, and May 73 and 51.
  • Summer: June averages 83 and 61, July 87 and 64, and August 84 and 63.
  • Fall: September averages 78 and 55, October 65 and 44, and November 51 and 35.

Averages hide extremes. The National Weather Service lists Toledo's record low as minus 20 degrees, set January 21, 1984. Snowfall varies a lot from winter to winter. The NWS reported that for winter 2024-2025, seasonal snowfall in northwest Ohio averaged only 10 to 20 inches and was below normal. A heavier winter will look different, so plan for the possibility of both. Our guide to delivery driver safety in Ohio winters covers preparation in detail.

How winter affects the roads

The City of Toledo says it clears roads by traffic volume, in four phases. Phase 1 includes streets with more than 7,500 vehicles a day, hospitals, fire stations and the downtown TARTA bus loop. Residential streets are Phase 4; the city says they are plowed only in larger storms and are not salted except in extreme conditions. The city applies brine to bridges, arterials and downtown streets up to 48 hours before predicted snow.

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office uses three snow levels. At Level III, travel on county roads other than the Ohio Turnpike is limited to emergency and essential personnel, and workers should check with their employer about reporting. The State of Ohio recommends OHGO for real-time road conditions.
